Women and Gender Studies: Interactive online environment

Lecturer, Lindsay Clowes of the ‘Women and Gender Studies’ Department has created an interactive online environment within the iKamva (Sakai) platform. Lindsay makes use of the online environment to:
–  send announcements;
–  upload course resources (such as core readings); and
–  link assignments to core readings.

The lecturer engages with students in the chat room (synchronous tool). Hence, Lindsay makes the effort to meet her students online at specific times, for these ‘live chats’.  The students too, have to be committed to engage within these specific, structured time-frames to discuss related topics.
Furthermore, the lecturer also creates interactive discussion forums (asynchronous tool), which enables the students to engage in discussion topics at their own pace.

Lindsay make use of the eAssessment tools, specifically the ‘Test and Quizzes’. An online test was created related to referencing techniques. Following, are some of the questions within the ‘question bank’:
Why should you use appropriate citations and referencing in your writing?
What evidence (if any) is there that the following paragraph might be plagiarised?
Do you think this example from a student’s essay is a good way to use a quote?
Which of the following two sentences are correctly referenced?

The CIECT team also conducted a demonstration for the students regarding the interactive online environment; and the use of the anti-plagiarism system, Turnitin (Tii).

NB: Please note that the eTeaching platform (Chisimba) will be phased out by the end of 2014. Hence lecturers are encouraged to contact the CIECT team, to make use of the iKamva (Sakai) platform.
